FDNY CoF – Supervision of Smoke Detectors (S-93) Practice Test

Ensuring compliance with local fire codes and regulations is essential when installing smoke detectors in public buildings because these codes are developed to enhance safety standards and protect occupants. Local regulations dictate specific requirements for the number, type, placement, and maintenance of smoke detectors based on the building's design, occupancy, and possible risks. Adhering to these codes helps to guarantee that the smoke detection system is effective and reliable, minimizing the risk of fire-related injuries or fatalities.

Other options suggest practices that are either too restrictive or unsuitable. For instance, installing detectors only in kitchens may lead to frequent false alarms, and using only battery-operated detectors could compromise safety in settings where electric smoke detectors are preferable for enhanced reliability. Lastly, installing smoke detectors at least 10 feet apart may not align with specific local requirements and could potentially reduce the effectiveness of the smoke detection system in detecting smoke promptly.
